Microvascular pattern and microsurface pattern classification. The vessel plus surface classification system is used to distinguish between cancerous and non-cancerous tissues in patients undergoing magnifying endoscopy with narrow-band imaging. If either the microvascular pattern (V) or the microsurface pattern (S) is classified as “irregular,” the lesion is diagnosed as cancerous. The details of the classification system are as follows: microvascular pattern: a uniform blood vessels (“regular”); b blood vessels that expand locally and are non-uniform (“irregular”); and c no vascular findings (“absent”). microsurface pattern: d uniform surface structure (“regular”); e non-uniform surface structure of different sizes (“irregular”); and f no surface structure (“absent”)
