Within the subserosa and to a lesser extent the submucosa, an arteriopathy exhibiting varying stages of inflammation and fibro-obliterative healing is identified. In this photomicrograph, the endothelium appears activated and is detached from the intima compatible with primary endothelial cell injury. As part of the acute response, there is an endoluminal influx of inflammatory cells especially macrophages. Note the red cell engulgment, a finding indicative of macrophage activation
